Ein ambitioniertes und vor allem aufwändiges Projekt. Lummerland wurde im Filmpark Babelsberg gebaut, die Wüstensequenzen wurden in Kapstadt gedreht – und die Mandala-Szenen in einer Halle vor Green Screens. Der Rest entstand am Computer.

Über ein Jahr lang arbeitete ein Team von knapp 20 Personen an dem Projekt. Natürlich hatten sie fast alle das Buch schon mal gelesen. Und jeder hatte sich sein eigenes Bild von Mandala gemacht, in der Fantasie. Denn es existiert gerade mal eine einzige Illustration davon.

Die prachtvollen Häuser mit den bunten Fahnen und den Lampions, der Palast, selbst das Einfügen der kleinen Kinder der Kindeskinder. „Das war für uns alle eine echte Herzensangelegenheit“, sagt Jan Burda, VFX Lead Compositor.

The film’s primary visual effects challenges involved the creation of the hundreds of photorealistic CG environments seen throughout the film’s dramatic action sequences.

About the Videos

The first video shows how the stunts were captured in front of a large greenscreen. The second video features the final sequence. I was part of a team of artists at ILM, creating the digital environments for the iconic cliff battle.

About the Project

ILM’s crew, lead by visual effects supervisor Jeff White, associate visual effects supervisors Jason Smith, Nigel Sumner and Brennan Doyle and Animation supervisor Marc Chu, were tasked with creating The Hulk, based on equal parts on-set performance capture and key frame animation and creating Iron Man’s iconic suit for every shot we worked on, as well as hero digital doubles for each of the film stars.

ILM also created the entirety of the midtown Manhattan environment which features heavily throughout the film. The crew completed a 275,000-photo survey mapping a massive swath of Manhattan in order to painstakingly recreate the location for the film’s action-packed end battle.

My Position

I contributed to the creation of Avengers as a senior compositing artist. Some of the shots I worked on include the destruction of Grand Central Station in New York.

Ein Jahrhundertbauwerk entsteht

2016 arbeitete ich zusammen mit dem Team von Mackevision am zweiteiligen Historienfilm über die Entstehung des Gotthard-Tunnels in den Schweizer Alpen. Mackevision war mit über 220 VFX-Shots in die Produktion des Filmes eingebunden und schon in der Vorbereitungszeit beim Scouten der Location beteiligt, um vor Beginn des Drehs ein digitales 3D-Set der Umgebung zu erstellen.
